Facts

  • Tallest church tower in The Netherlands.
  • The huge western tower was built in front of the nave from 1321-1382.
  • A 105 meter tall replica of the Domtoren was built in the Huis Ten Bosch themepark in Nagasaki (Japan).
  • In 1674 the nave collapsed by a tornado.
  • This cathedral is built according to the high gothic scheme of cathedrals like La Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Tournai and Hohe Domkirche St. Peter und Maria.
  • The tower made a huge impression on the population at that time. For instance the tower of the cathedral can be seen on the ‘Adoration of the Lamb’, a painting by Van Eyck, today displayed in Sint-Baafskathedraal in Ghent.
  • For centuries the Domtoren was the tallest man-made structure in the Netherlands. It was finally surpassed by the first long distance radio telecommunication towers which were erected near Radio Kootwijk - Gebouw A in the early 20th century.
