Facts

  • The Millennium Dome is the world's largest 'dome' and is built on the meridian line in Greenwich.
  • The canopy is fabricated from glass-fibre, coated in self-cleaning polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and is transluscent.
  • The dome is the world's largest single-roofed structure and is supported by 12 100 metre (328 feet) pylons each weighing 500 tonnes, held together by 72 kilometres (44 miles) of steel cables.
  • The dome is over 1 kilometre (0.62 miles) in circumference and 320 metres (1,050 feet) in diameter.
  • Awards garnered by the dome include: a RIBA Award 2000, Civic Trust Award Commendation, 2000 and; European Structural Steel Design Award, 2000.
  • The dome recalls the Dome of Discovery, built for the 1951 Festival of Britain.
  • The dome's new name is pronounced 'oh two'.
  • Contrary to popular belief, the dome is neither capable of accommodating the Tour Eiffel lying on its side, nor covering the Pyramid of Khufu.
  • Redevelopment saw The O2 re-open in 2007 with a 23,000 seat sport and entertainment arena, seven bars and ten restaurants.
  • The O2 is fundamentally a huge entertainment complex with a smaller venue for concerts, a cinema and exhibition centre; an ice rink will be available in winter.
  • Corporate boxes feature kitchens, TVs and bars and are situated around the middle two levels.
  • Acoustics are claimed to be "four times better" than those of the Royal Albert Hall.
