  • The building was requisitioned by the government in World War II to be used as the Ministry of Supply.
  • Shell Mex House is Grade II Listed.
  • Shell Mex House occupies a site formerly occupied by the Cecil Hotel, Europe's largest hotel with 800 rooms when it was built in 1886. It was named for the site's previous owners the Earls of Salisbury, who were also known as the Cecil Family. The Shell oil company purchased the building in 1930 and demolished all but the Strand facade.
