Facts

  • Became after the reconstruction France's tallest building, surpassing Tour Montparnasse in Paris.
  • While the original tower is built entirely with reinforced concrete, the structure added during reconstruction is composite: the new floors are made of steel and surround the vertically-extended concrete core.
  • The tower's reconstruction is part of a major new development project billed as La Défense 2015 which will also include a number of new towers.
  • The 40-story, 189-meter high first phase was completed in 1974 and featured an aluminum facade and double-glazed windows which contrasted with tones of bronze-colored stone.
  • The building's original three-pointed star shape symbolized the merger of three insurance companies into one, Union des Assurances de Paris.
