Outstanding works of art in the interior include Permosers rococo chancel, altar paintings of Mengs, and a Silbermann organ.
In the ground-level vaults are the sarcophaguses of the Wettiner (royal family of Saxony) and the heart of August the Strong.
The largest church in Saxony, the Katholische Hofkirche was designed in the Baroque style.
Although Saxony was staunchly Protestant, King August the Strong had converted to Catholicism in order to take the throne of Poland. This required the construction of a Catholic church for use by the court. Planning had to be carried out under top secrecy because of friction with the Protestants.
The Hofkirche was elevated to Cathedral of the diocese of Dresden-Meissen in 1980.
