Facts

  • Outstanding works of art in the interior include Permosers rococo chancel, altar paintings of Mengs, and a Silbermann organ.
  • In the ground-level vaults are the sarcophaguses of the Wettiner (royal family of Saxony) and the heart of August the Strong.
  • The largest church in Saxony, the Katholische Hofkirche was designed in the Baroque style.
  • Although Saxony was staunchly Protestant, King August the Strong had converted to Catholicism in order to take the throne of Poland. This required the construction of a Catholic church for use by the court. Planning had to be carried out under top secrecy because of friction with the Protestants.
  • The Hofkirche was elevated to Cathedral of the diocese of Dresden-Meissen in 1980.
