Facts

  • During the uprisings of 1989, prayer vigils for peace were held here that were followed by demonstrations.
  • The Kreuzkirche is home to the world-famous Dresden Kreuzchor.

  • Its predecessor dated from 1579-1584 and featured an imposing 90-meter high tower. This building was heavily bombed by Prussians in the Seven Years War and had to be replaced. The tower collapsed in 1765 and was rebuilt between 1781 and 1788. Consecration was in 1792 with final completion in 1800.
  • Reconstruction following heavy damage in WWII occured between 1946 and 1955, though the interior was left as unadorned masonry.
