Facts

  • Leipzig's New City Hall was built on the site of the Pleissenburg, a fortification which had stood on this site (in different forms) since the 13th Century. The Old City Hall on the Market Square had become too small for the growing city.
  • The design was decided by competition - with the winner being the city building director, Hugo Licht. The powerful design was meant to symbolize the strength of the middle class vs. the aristocracy.
  • The building is decorated inside and out with numerous sculptures and reliefs from the hands of artists such as Georg Wrba, Adolf Lehnert, and Carl Seffner.
  • The cost of the structure was some 8 million Marks, making it one of the most expensive city hall projects of its time.
  • The building consists of around 600 rooms.
