Facts

  • One of the largest monuments in Europe, the Voelkerschlachtdenkmal (people's battle memorial) was built on the hundredth anniversary of the 1813 Battle of Leipzig.
  • Some 300,000 troops of the Allied Prussian, Austrian, and Russian army fought 190,000 of Napolean's men from the 16th to the 19th of October. At the cost of 80,000 dead and 100,000 wounded, Napolean was repulsed and the balance of power in Europe was shifted against him. The Battle of Leipzig is considered one of the most important in European history.
