Facts

  • This building is the library of the University of Ghent (RUG) and contains about two million books.
  • There is a belvedere in the shape of a Greek cross on top of the building, which provides a panoramic view.
  • According to the architect, the cross represents the link between sky and earth, a mixture of time and space.
  • The architect designed every single detail of the tower, from the basic construction to the type of windows and the furniture of the building.
  • On July the first 1992, the building became a National Protected Monument.
  • Because of the difficult economical situation and the start of World War II, the project was regarding the interior of the building never finished according to the guidelines and plans of the architect.
