Facts

  • The luxury hotel opened in 2009 as HSBC moved out after the 2003 bombings and renovations had taken place. The attacks killed more than 40 people.
  • It was built in 1998 as Demirbank's headquarters, but became HSBC Plaza after the international giant purchased Turkey's Demirbank in September 2001.
  • A special type of stone imported from Japan was used for the exterior finishing. This stone doesn't hold dirt, giving the building's exterior an ever-clean appearance. The blue glass was imported from USA.
  • On November 20, 2003, the front façade of the building was heavily damaged by the greatest-ever terrorist attack in Istanbul's history. Ten people were killed in and around the building. The tower was insured by Basak Sigorta and underwent reconstruction.
