Theodore Metochites, who was Prime Minister of the Byzantine Empire under Andronikos II, undertook an extensive restoration of the Chora Monastery, ca. 1316-21. He is also responsible for the extensive cycles of mosaic and fresco decoration, from which the church is justifiably famous. (Source: Constantinople Page)
The church of The Holy Savior in Chora (Kariye Camii) is the most important monument of the Palaeologan (late Byzantine) period. It is the most interesting Byzantine church in Istanbul after the Haghia Sophia, due to the richness of its well-preserved mosaics. Its unique iconographic programme, the quality and beauty of the mosaics and wall paintings, make it one of the most outstanding masterpieces of Byzantine art in the world.
