  • Originally built by Constantine The Great in the 4th Century AD in a place where once stood a pre-Christian temple, the current building dates from the time of Justinian The Great.
  • Today, the Haghia Irene is used as a concert hall during the annual Istanbul Classical Music Festival, due to its excellent acoustic qualities.
  • The icons and frescoes which once covered the inner walls of the church were destroyed during the Iconoclastic Period
