  • Cathedral has 112 polished granite columns, of which the biggest are 17 meters tall and weigh 130 tons each
  • Cathedral has 14 different kinds of marble and 43 other types of stones and minerals.
  • The golden domes have around 100kg of gold.
  • St. Isaac's Church has been one of the longest building projects in the world. It took over 40 years to complete this Church.
  • Gold was applied to the dome(s) by the fire-gild process where an amalgam of gold and mercury is spread over the surface and then heated, driving off the mercury and leaving behind the gold.
  • As many as 60 laborers are believed to have died as a result of mercury inhalation during the gilding process for the domes.
