Facts

  • This building was the first in Cape Town to have glass-walled observation elevators, behind a clear continuous glass curtain.
  • The underlying rock is so hard that it became too expensive to provide underground parking, sparking controversy and opposition to the development for taking up valuable parking space in the CBD.
  • Topping out 4 weeks ahead of schedule, this building was completed in a mere 35 months.
  • The elevator shaft is covered by 3 700 square metres of glass, weighing 68 700 kilograms.
  • The building is linked by a network of underground shopping concourses to the Picbell Parkade, Golden Acre complex and Cape Town railway station.
  • 60 000 cubic metres of rock was excavated on site.
