Facts

  • The original Christ The Saviour Cathedral was demolished in 1931 to make way for the grand Palace of Soviets. This project, however, never got higher than a few floors above ground. It became the world's biggest outdoor swimming pool until the reconstruction of Christ The Saviour Cathedral in 1997.
  • The statue of Lenin on top of the building was designed to be some 100m tall.
  • The site is currently occupied by the restored Christ The Savior Cathedral.
  • The project was cancelled when the Nazis invaded the Soviet Union and the country entered a time of hardship never seen before by its people.
