Facts

  • A similar structure for Sears, now called Midtown Exchange, was completed 7 years later in Minneapolis. After sitting vacant for 10 years, it was refurbished from 2004-2006 into a mixed-use office, residential, and retail complex.
  • This is the tallest building ever demolished in St. Paul.
  • The Montgomery Ward Building was the tallest structure in Saint Paul's Midway District and a familiar landmark along the northside of Interstate 94 until demolition in 1996. The shopping center that sits on the current sight featured a new Montgomery Ward Store (now Herberger's) and includes a small ornamental tower on the eastside, in obvious deference to the original building.
  • The main warehouse stood directly behind a 5-story administration building and retail store which fronted University Avenue.
