  • On June 16, 1994 a fire in Room 607 of the Pennsylvania Transportation and Safety Building damaged four floors and left many of the remaining floors contaminated with asbestos and other potential carcinogens.
  • Estimates to repair the 31 year-old building topped $116 million, leading to the decision to demolish it and erect a new building in its place.
  • The building was imploded on August 1, 1998.
  • The Commonwealth Keystone Building now stands in its place.
