Facts

  • The Buccaneer Hotel was built in 1929 as one of Galveston's first tourist hotels. It also became a social center for local residents.
  • Closed in 1961, it was taken over by the Methodist Church, which ran it as the Edgewater Retirement Home.
  • In the late 1990s, when it became apparent that renovation costs would be double the cost of replacement, a new retirement facility was built.
  • The Buccaneer was demolished at noon on January 1, 1999.
