Facts

  • The building had an extremely ornate Second Empire design, with a huge mansard roof and rows of large arched windows at lobby level.
  • Replaced by the 2 North LaSalle office building, which reused the hotel's foundations.
  • 105 caissons were utilized in the foundation.
  • On June 5, 1946, a large fire broke out in the hotel’s restaurant, killing 61. This incident led to improved firefighting procedures and building codes in Chicago.
