Facts

  • Fundacion Caixa Galicia, a gallery for the display of Galician art, takes its name from the local co-operative bank that has amassed the collection.
  • The front facade is a considered response to the sensitive historic context. The strongly outward sloping, marble clad form allows daylight to penetrate the accommodation below ground while a latticework glazed screen reinstates to street line.
  • The dramatic panoramic glass lifts and double helix stair in the internal street enable visitors to orient themselves and maximise accessibility.
  • This is the first permanent building that Nicholas Grimshaw & Partners has completed in Spain and gives La Coruna a center for meeting and learning which contributes to the cultural life of this historic city.
  • The building garnered an RIBA European Award, 2006.
