  • The building occupies a full block site and replaces the 1960s library located on the same site.
  • Capacity for more than 1.4 million books and materials.
  • The steel framing fabricating was done in Portland and Vancouver and then transported to the site.
  • Steel erection began in December 2002. The last steel beam was lifted into place May 7, 2003.
  • Grand Opening ceremonies Sunday, May 23, 2004.
  • This building was recognized with a 2004 Honor Award for Washington Architecture by the American Institute of Architects - Seattle Chapter.
  • In 2005 the building won an Honor Award for Outstanding Architecture from the American Institute of Architects national body.
  • Principal architect: Rem Koolhaas.
