Facts

  • The lobby contains a 15 by 60-foot long reflecting pool, which separates secure and non-secure areas.
  • The building is supported and reinforced through a "redundant structural system" engineered by Seattle-based Skilling Ward Magnusson Barkshire to avoid collapse in the event of an explosion. In such an event, an integrated cable system would support the perimeter of each floor.
  • Design includes a 1 acre landscaped public plaza running the full length of the Seventh Avenue side.
  • Replaces the United States Courthouse on Fifth Avenue built more than a half century ago and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
  • This building was recognized with a commendation by the jury of the 2004 Honor Award for Washington Architecture from the American Institute of Architects - Seattle Chapter.
  • Over-height floors create courtroom atmosphere.
