Nara City is the first and ancient capital of Japan, and home to the miniature Japanese deer, some hundreds of which live within the city limits.

A number of important historical buildings, temples and sites of war are found in the prefecture as well as the Nara Great Buddha, the Nara Daibutsu, which is housed in the largest wooden building in the world. The original building was destoryed by fire many hundreds of years ago and was 40% larger than the present buiding.
