Complicating matters is the definition of "tallest building" itself. Until 1998, the Sears Tower in Chicago (1,730 feet) was considered the tallest building in the world. Then along came Malaysia's Petronas Towers, whose antennae, in a direct slap at Midwestern supremacy, extended 30 feet higher than that of the Sears Tower. (The Patronas Towers building without the antennae is, in fact, smaller than the Sears). Si erge per 50 piani fino a 203 metri di altezza, dalla forma rigonfia con una rete intricata di linee diagonali che si incrociano. Da qui il nome di "Cocoon Tower": un bozzolo, o meglio un incubatore dove gli studenti sono accolti e trovano ispirazione per la creazione, la crescita e la trasformazione delle proprie idee e talenti. Ai suoi studenti l'edificio offre aule studio confortevoli e innovative, più auditorium e spazi per le riunioni. Il progetto della torre dell'anno è dell'architetto giapponese Kenzo Tange uno dei più grandi rappresentanti dell'architettura giapponese del dopoguerra, vincitore del Pritzker Prize nel 1987. Tange prese parte alla ricostruzione di Hiroshima, con il "Peace Park" e il centro cittadino, che assursero a primo "memorial park" del genere. Sua anche la celebre piscina per le Olimpiadi di Tokyo del 1964. Scomparso nel 2005, Tange ha lasciato tra i suoi ultimi progetti proprio la Cocoon Tower, affidata adesso allo studio da egli stesso fondato, la Kenzo Associates - composto da più di 100 architetti -, con filiali a Parigi, New York, Singapore e Sidney. As we humans have, inevitably, built our way back into the heavens, we have also continuously competed over the record for the world's tallest building. That record is currently held by the Taipei 101 Tower in Taiwan. Built in 2004, the Taipei 101 rises to 1,671 feet easily beating out the Ancient Babylonian Ziggurat scholars name as a possible source for the Biblical tower (which stood around 300 feet tall). Tokyo’s Mode Gakuen Cocoon Tower has just been named the skyscraper of the year by Emporis, a German-based Web site that compiles data on very tall buildings. The Gherkin-esque tower, designed by Kenzo Tange Associates, bested Seoul’s Boutique Monaco (Mass Studies; void-pocked mixed-use block) and the Shanghai World Financial Center (Kohn Pedersen Fox; giant bottle-cap opener) to join such past winners as Calatrava’s Turning Torso, Norman Foster’s Hearst Building, and the aforementioned Het Strijkijzer, a Flatiron look-alike in The Hague.
