Times Square, New York City
About this Zone
Times Square is the heart of New York’s Theater district and has become a center for tourism, entertainment and business. Originally called Longacre Square, the area was renamed Times Square in 1905 when The New York Times completed its new headquarters building at 42nd & Broadway in the heart of the new theater district. By 1930 over 20 high rise hotels, the tallest rising up to 27 stories, had been built in the vicinity. Grand theaters and small office buildings lined Broadway and 7th Avenue from 42nd up into the west 50’s. As the area fell into decline, plans were drawn up for aggressive redevelopment of Times Square. To prevent the area from becoming a desolate canyon of towers, incentives are given for renovating or building new theaters and extensive signage and lighting are required. The first large scale modern office towers were built in the 1970’s. During the late 1980’s and 1990’s six major high-rise hotels were built in the heart of Times Square. And in the first years of this millenium, a series of office towers have literally surrounded the Times Tower and the Times Square zone is rapidly expanding west.
