Canary Wharf, London
About this Zone
Canary Wharf is a commercial estate formed as part of an Enterprise Zone - a de-regulated planning district created in the 1980s. Developed by one company, Canary Wharf Group PLC, the original planning permission allowed for the creation of an office district totalling 1.1m sq m (12.2m sq ft) spread over 86 acres of former docks.
The maritime heritage of the site explains the preponderence of water (shown as white areas on the map) both within and around the estate. The name Canary Wharf refers to the dock in which goods from the Canary Islands were off-loaded, with other names such as West India Quay and Canada Square evoking the global reach of the former docks.
By 2002, the Canary Wharf Estate had become the nucleus of London's third major business district, with 1.45m sq m (15.7m sq ft) of floorspace built, under construction or permitted and plans for a further 370,000sq m (4m sq ft) to be built by 2008.
As well as being a major office centre, Canary Wharf is also home to the majority of London's tallest buildings, and features works by Foster + Partners, Cesar Pelli & Associates Architects, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, Inc., Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates PC, and Pei Cobb Freed & Partners.
