News: 2 construction cranes fall during quake in Taiwan
Taipei:
Four people were killed and several others injured when 2 construction cranes fell from the 60th floor of the Taipei Financial Center during a 6.8 magnitude earthquake, which was centered 108 miles east of Taipei. The Taipei Financial Center will be the world's tallest building when completed at a height of 508 meters with 101 stories. Steel rods and other objects rained down on the streets injuring about 10 others and damaging several cars. 213 people have been reported injured across the island of Taipei.
Taiwan is frequented by tremors. A magnitude 7.6 earthquake in September 1999 killed 2,378 people and destroyed more than 40,000 homes. |
