About
The island of Aruba is a popular tourist resort in the southern Caribbean. In 1499 it was discovered by Spanish explorers, and since 1636 it has been a territory of the Netherlands. In 1986 it separated from the Netherlands Antilles becoming a separate territory. In 1994, residents of the island elected not to pursue a movement towards independence.
