- The Fontana almost singlehandedly started a civic revolt in the late 60's over the "Manhattanization" of San Francisco.
- The Fontana developer was Robert D. Fraser.
- Built on the site of the Fontana Fruit Canning Co. brick warehouses, hence the namesake. Marco Fontana founded the California Fruit Canners Association.
- Fontana's first tenant (west tower) was aviation pioneer/inventor Cleve T. Shaffer, who was also Fontana's first tenant death on October 27, 1964.
