Old Woking has Norman Origins; it was the site of a Royal residence for about 150 years in the 15th and 16th Centuries, before becoming a minor market town in the 1600's.
Woking began to grow in the early 1800's when London and Southampton were connected by rail, and the town was seen as a place to bury London's dead. The result was Brookwood Cemetery, part of which was later sold off to later become the 'new' Woking. The Shah Jehan Mosque, which opened in Woking in 1889, was Britain's first.
