Santa Cruz was founded in 1495 by Fernández de Lugo. This city (now with Las Palmas) is the capital of the Canary Islands since 1927, before it was the only capital city in the Canaries. Santa Cruz has the third most important port of Spain and is also the commercial and tourist centre of the Canary Islands.
There are two airports: Aeropuerto de Los Rodeos, built in 1929 and now under enlargement, the runway has 3.4 km. It's located 12 km from Santa Cruz and it's the first airport of Tenerife. Aeropuerto Internacional de Reina Sofía was built in 1978, runway is 3.2 km and it's located 59 km from Santa Cruz.
The carnival of Santa Cruz one of the most important in Europe and one of the unique the world. Santa Cruz is one of the greenest cities in Spain with a lot of trees and vegetation; in almost all of the streets and avenues you can see trees and flowers. The biggest park in Santa Cruz is "Parque García Sanabria", with around 58,000 square meters.
