Mitaka is in central western Tokyo.
The city is a residential suburb for the downtown area and hosts the National Astronomical Observatory, made famous in 1999 by the completion of the world's largest optical telescope, the Subaru Telescope on Mauna Kea in Hawaii. The telescope has the capability to be controlled remotely and plans are in place to control the telescope from the Mitaka campus.
