Kolkata is the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal. Situated on the banks of river Hooghly, Kolkata is a major riverine port. The city is the business and financial hub of eastern India.

The metropiltan area is about 1785 sq km (KMDA) and includes three Municipal Corporations - Kolkata, Howrah, Chandan Nagar, 38 Municipalities, 72 Non-municipal urban areas and 340 rural Mouzas in 165 Panchayats and 22 Panchayat Samities.

The main concentration of high rise buildings is on J.L. Nehru Road and the adjoining areas in central Kolkata. Multistoried apartment buildings have come up in Ballygunge and Alipore, which are mainly residential districts in south Kolkata. Some tall buildings are also coming up in the planned suburbs of Bidhan Nagar and New Town in north Kolkata and the eastern fringes along the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass in south Kolkata.
