About Jersey City

247,597 in city
22,103,232 in metro
14.88 mi² (38.53 km²)

Located on a peninsula between the Hackensack and Hudson Rivers, Jersey City is five miles east of Newark and just west of Manhattan. It dates back to 1629, making it one of the first settlements in New Jersey and older than St. Petersburg, Russia.

There are three major concentrations of skyscrapers: along the Hudson River at Exchange Place and Newport Center; the Medical Center at Baldwin Avenue and Montgomery Street; and Journal Square.

Jersey City has experienced remarkable renewal in the past twenty years, replacing old railway yards with parks and commercial development. The "Gold Coast" along the Hudson is presently considered one of the hottest real estate markets in the country.
