Hemel Hempstead is a small town lying in the borough of Dacorum, which covers most of the old Hundred of Dacorum in west Hertfordshire. It sits on the chalk foothills of the Chiltern Hills, and through its valley runs the river Gade.

The town is dominated by two buildings; Kodak House, built in 1970, and the outstanding St. Mary's Church, built in 1180 with a spire dating from 1340.
