Created in 1974 by the amalgamation of the towns of Acton and Georgetown, and the township of Esquesing. The name derives from a combination of the area's topography and the surrounding Regional Municipality of Halton - wich in turn was named for William Halton, secretary to Upper Canada's then Lieutenant Governor Francis Gore, back in 1816.
