In 1749 Edward Cornwallis landed with 2,500 settlers on the Chebucto peninsula to establish a permanent fortified settlement. The fort was named Halifax in honour of Lord Halifax, President of the British Board of Trade.
Today Metro Halifax is the commercial, educational, research and technological centre of Atlantic Canada. A modern port city, it comprises 40% of the population of Nova Scotia. The area recently celebrated the 250th anniversary of its founding.
