Easton

Easton was founded by Thomas Penn in 1752 and named for his uncle's estate in England, Easton-Neston. It is situated at the confluence of the Lehigh and Delaware Rivers, about 50 miles north of Philadelphia and 65 miles west of New York. Its location led it to become an early industrial center in the 19th Century. Today its major industries include machinery, textiles, and paper, as well as the Crayola crayon factory, a popular tourist destination.

Surrounded by a rich farming area, it is the site of a farmers market which dates back to colonial times. The market takes place in the Centre Square, part of Penn's original plan, site of the first courthouse, and still the heart of the downtown.
