Drammen was founded when Bragernes, on the north side of Drammenselva, was united with Strømsø and Tangen on the south side of the river in 1811.
Drammen is located about 40 kilometres southwest of Oslo, on the mouth of Drammenselva. Drammen is a transportation junction, and major roads and railway lines runs through the city.
Drammen was awarded the 2003 Norwegian city beautification award.
