Detroit was founded in 1701 and incorporated as a city in 1815. The city consists of 140 square miles on the Detroit River just north of Windsor, Canada. Home of the famous "Motown Sound", Detroit is also the center of the American automobile manufacturing industry.
The Detroit skyline is unique, dominated near the river by the 5 futuristic towers of the General Motors Renaissance Center while much of the rest of the downtown and New Center skylines are among the best collections of 1920s-30s skyscrapers anywhere.
