About Curitiba

1,797,408 in city
3,260,292 in metro
167.95 mi² (435 km²)

The capital of the wealthy State of Paraná, Curitiba has increased its population tenfold between 1940 and 2000 while maintaining one of the highest standards of living in South America.

The city was planned by the urbanist Jaime Lerner, partner of the former mayor, Machado. Its 'intelligent' public transportation system made the construction of an expensive subway system superfluous, leaving funds for social programs and urbanization.

The developing axes of this small megacity are accented by skyscrapers, and form the unique and tremendous skyline of Curitiba, the "Ecologic Capital" of Latin America. It has even won a UNESCO prize for its urban development. And the red buses designed in Curitiba can be seen today even in Manhattan!
