Corunna is the seat of Shiawassee County, located on the Shiawassee River just a few miles southeast of Owosso, the largest city in the county. The unincorporated village was platted in 1837, and became the county seat in 1840. It was then incorporated as a village in 1858, and finally as a city in 1869. The city was reportedly named by Andrew Mack, on of the city's founders, after A Coruña, Spain, where he had visited at a time to purchase sheep.
