Venezuela's capital and one of South America's largest cities, Caracas was a Spanish colony founded in 1567 near the south coast of the Caribbean Sea. The city sits in a high valley, and today one side of this valley is preserved as Avila National Park.
Caracas enjoyed tremendous growth during the oil booms of the 1970's and 1980's.
