Bogotá

Colombia’s capital. Bogotá is located in the center of the country at a high plateau called the “Bogotá’s Savannah” at the height of 8530 ft (2600 meters) above sea level. It is one of the most prosperous and largest cities in South America, and it abounds with parks, museums and a particular architecture based on brick.

Founded by the Spanish conqueror Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada, at the bottom of two hills (today known as Monserrate and Guadalupe), in 1538, Bogota was an indigenous establishment known by the name of “Bacatá”, word from which comes the present name. Bogotá’s downtown shelters the most important historic buildings, as is the traditional Bolívar square, where the government buildings are located and in the district of La Candelaria which is the oldest neighborhood in Colombia.

Skyscrapers in Bogota are located in many sites. In the International center you find the highest buildings and in the north of the city there is a great number of residential buildings with brick facades. The financial center, located in Chile Avenue, has the most modern and beautiful buildings in the city, although these are not very high.
