Allentown

Allentown is an industrial city located on the Lehigh River in eastern Pennsylvania, about 70 miles north of Philadelphia and 90 miles west of New York. The seat of Lehigh County, it is the home of Muhlenberg College and Cedar Crest College. With neighboring Bethlehem and Easton it forms a metropolitan area of over half a million people called the Lehigh Valley.

Allentown was founded in 1762 by William Allen, chief justice of Pennsylvania. Much of the city's history was influenced by large numbers of Germans who settled in this area in the 1600's and 1700's. The city's architecture is strongly characterized by brick row houses dating from the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The Lehigh Valley's tall buildings are unusually dispersed. Not only are they divided between the three major cities, many are located outside the downtown areas. In Allentown, the dominance of the Pennsylvania Power & Light Building makes it easy to overlook the city's numerous mid-rise buildings.
