Mankato lies on the Minnesota River just as it turns north to meet the Mississippi River near Minneapolis and Saint Paul, which are 80 miles to the northeast. The county seat of Blue Earth County, the city is also home to a campus of Minnesota State University. The downtown area is located on flat land along the Minnesota River, but the city has grown up and onto bluffs rising more than 200 feet to the gently-rolling agricultural lands dotted with lakes and woodlots.
