Located just 25 miles southwest of Philadelphia at the state's northern tip, Wilmington is Delaware's largest city. It was founded as Willingtown in 1731, and renamed 8 years later. Wilmington experienced major growth during the Civil War due to its location near the border between Union and Confederate territories. As shipbuilding and other industries grew, the city's population increased from 21,000 in 1860 to more than 110,000 in 1920. Some of the city's population, however, was lost to the suburbs during major transportation developments of the 1950's. Wilmington owes much of its current prosperity to Delaware's liberal tax laws. Largely adopted in the 1980's, they have attracted dozens of international insurance and finance companies and increased development in the city center.
