Located in West-Central Florida on the Gulf of Mexico Coast.
Settled in the early 1800's as Fort Brooke. Over time a town grew around the fort and took the name of Tampa after the large bay surrounding the city. The city was incorporated in 1855 with just 800 residents.
The city grew after the arrival of the railroad and experienced a boom like the rest of Florida in the 1910's and 1920's. It all came crashing down in the late 1920's, but Tampa recovered relatively quickly with a diversified industrial base. Tampa is the third largest city in Florida and forms, with Saint Petersburg and Clearwater, the core of state's second largest metropolitan area.
