The second largest city in Indiana, Fort Wayne was founded in 1794 around a military outpost of the same name. The city grew rapidly in the 1840's after the completion of the Wabash & Erie Canal, which provided the most direct transportation link from the Great Lakes to the Ohio River. Headwaters Park just north of downtown marks the meeting of the Saint Joseph and Saint Mary's Rivers forming the Maumee River which then flows northeast toward Lake Erie. The city has a diversified industrial base and serves as the major trade center for northeastern Indiana and neighboring parts of Ohio.
