Cairns, in Far North Queensland, is a tropical, laid-back modern city. A major port for sugar, and due to its proximity to The Great Barrier Reef, a tourist magnet. The city name comes from the State Governor of the day, Sir William Cairns. The first settlers to the area were in 1876, and Cairns was declared a municipal in 1884.
